I Got Angels All Around Me: Faith, Prayer, and the Power to Walk

I never imagined that my journey toward healing would come through the lessons of my “angels.” At the lowest point in my life, I was bedridden, completely dependent, and being pushed around in a wheelchair. My dream wasn’t to run marathons or climb mountains—it was something much simpler: to be independent, to use a self-driving wheelchair. That dream felt impossible at the time.

But God had other plans.

The Call to Pray

My Joe saw things differently. While I clung to practical solutions and technology, Joe wept for me. He cried out that I needed to pray directly to Jesus—that He would heal me. As a Catholic, I wasn’t prepared for such bold and fervent prayers. My faith, while real, was quieter, more structured. But Joe insisted. He urged me to go beyond tradition and pray with the fire of expectation.

Then came my roommate, Dorene—another angel in disguise. She gave me steps that became my roadmap:

  • Step 1: Accept Jesus Christ as my personal Savior.
  • Step 2: Read the Bible daily.
  • Step 3: Pray bold prayers.

It wasn’t easy at first. Praying with that kind of passion felt foreign to me. But slowly, I began to believe.

A Story in Acts

In my daily Bible reading, I came across Acts 3:1–10. Peter and John encounter a man who had been lame from birth. Over 40 years old, he had never walked. As they entered the temple gate, Peter didn’t offer him money. Instead, he declared: “In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk.” And immediately, the man leapt up, stood, and walked.

That story became my mirror. Like the man at the gate, I longed for healing—not just for mobility, but for dignity and independence. The boldness of Peter’s faith shook me. If he could command healing in Jesus’ name, what could fervent prayer do in my own life?

Walking My Journey

My story doesn’t end with me leaping to my feet. But through hard work and prayer, I now walk with a walker. That alone is a miracle. Yet, my heart yearns for more—to walk with a cane. My fervent prayer coaches, Joe and Dorene, have both gone home to the Lord. But I carry their strength, their voices, and their unwavering faith within me.

And so, I press on. Every day I pray bold prayers. Every day I trust that Jesus hears me. And every day I remind myself that I am not alone.

Final Thoughts

I don’t know how my story will end, but I do know this: the same Jesus who lifted the lame man in Acts is still at work today. My angels—both here on earth and in heaven—continue to teach me to walk in faith, one bold prayer at a time.

Edie, I would like to join you in thanking the Lord for His healing power. He also healed me (stage 4 cancer), and I am so grateful that I can continue to share His love and my testimony with others, just as you are doing.

Jesus is so good, so gracious, so merciful, and so wonderful! My prayer is that He will continue to strengthen you each day by His Word and His Spirit.

    Blessings! (Numbers 6:24-26)
